Yesterday, I came across a blogpost (http://blogs.villagevoice.com/forkintheroad/archives/2008/07/ordering_off_me.php) about the "Special Vegetarian" sandwich at the Blimpie on 46th St. between 5th & 6th. The "Special Vegetarian", also known as the "Nacho Cheese Sandwich", is comprised of toasted bread, crushed bits of Doritos, the standard Blimpies cheap veggies (iceberg lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots and green bell peppers), jalapeno slices, american cheese, oil & vinegar, salt, pepper, mayo and the hot green chile chutney sauce. It sounds kinda gross but really intriguing, no? Both Fork in the Road and Midtown Lunch give it good reviews. So, of course, that's what I had for lunch today.
My review: the hot sauce is overwhelming and everything else is underwhelming. a critical failure is the bread. regardless of the filling, stale bread makes any sandwich kinda suck. BUT i do give them a lot of credit for putting doritos in a sandwich. that's just awesome.
